Despite calls by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg urging Europe to keep the Russian shadow fleet away from European shores, Maltese-flagged vessels remain deeply integrated in the Russian oil trading industry. The Foreign Minister made these appeals after Ukraine struck a Russian gas-laden ship just outside Maltese waters.
The Russian shadow fleet vessel Gea, is still regularly trading Russian oil despite having been flagged by the Ukrainian authorities as being part of the Russian shadow fleet. The vessel, which is Maltese-flagged is currently outside Port Said, Egypt, where the Russian oil trade is booming.ย Another Maltese-flagged vessel which has loaded with Russian oil (Primorsk) and is also outside Port Said is the (Marathi IMO: 9772357).
