Libya abandons Arctic Metagaz salvage operation due to bad weather

The Libyan authorities have abandoned their salvage operation of the Arctic Metagaz due to bad weather which made the operation unsafe. The wreckage of the ship is now drifting outside Maltese waters once again.

It is unclear what will happen to the wreckage now as the Maltese government has so far refused to get involved in securing the wreckage. The vessel still is loaded with its fuel which can leak if the fuel tanks are damaged. An engine or diesel oil leak would potentially cause environmental disaster to Malta’s coast: the ship is loaded with diesel and engine oil.

Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs has been evasive on why the government hasn’t yet taken to salvage the wreckage but states the government is working to prevent the Russian shadow fleet from travelling outside our shores.

Meanwhile, the Maltese government keeps turning a blind eye to potential environmental hazard outside our shores. The vessel is now approaching Malta from the south-east direction.
