Unusual and illicit activity returns with a bang in Hurd’s Bank

Illicit activity in Hurd’s Bank winded down following the attack on the Arctic Metagaz, but it seems to be picking up again. The Arctic Metagaz has finally been salvaged by the Libyan authorities.

Unusual and illicit activity has a returned in Hurd’s Bank during the past few days with sanctioned vessels passing and anchoring through the area as ship-to-ship oil transfers also took place. Some of the sanctioned vessels that passed through include the Phoenix E, which is on its way to Havana, Cuba, and also the GEB (IMO 9409986), which is part of the Russian shadow fleet.

Other ships passing through also seem to have a history of involvement with the Russian Shadow Fleet including the Ghibli (IMO 9417799), while others have recorded visits at Russian ports.

The sudden return of sanctioned tankers and illicit and unusual activity in Hurd’s Bank is ongoing, despite the Maltese government’s attempts to keep these vessels away from our shores.
