Port Said in Egypt has been a recipient of Russian oil despite EU and US sanctions, but the illegal oil trade outside the harbour and in international waters is also increasing.
Port Said is becoming increasingly important for the illegal Russian oil trade due to a reduced illegal activity in Hurd’s Bank, the squeezing of the Russian shadow fleet in Europe and also the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed oil prices up.
Egypt, alongside Turkey, is one of the countries which has so far got away with serial violations of sanctions against Russia.
Ships outside the harbour of Port Said are being serviced ship-to-ship while others are trading in Russian oil inside the harbour and in Egyptian territory. At least two major oil companies are involved in the illegal Russian oil trade in Egypt and outside its waters.
Vessels are also purchasing Russian oil from Egypt and delivering it to several countries including India, China, and Singapore.
