Exclusive: Broad coalition taking over Birkirkara FC revealed

A comprehensive coalition of investors, corporate entities, and legal professionals has been compiled to form the new administrative foundation of Birkirkara FC following the recent departure of its former president.
An official club document dated May 10, 2026, details a diverse group of prominent local and international figures stepping forward to steer the Maltese Premier League club under an upcoming, modernised leadership structure.
The strategy focuses on restructuring the clubโ€™s sporting and commercial operational wings. The newly backed administration is comprised of established businessmen, architects, and legal professionals representing corporate interests from both local markets and international regions, including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Notable corporate entities and institutional backers named in the transition plans include Elaris Advisory UAE, Krateia Ventures Limited, Clif Co Limited, and the Libyan Institute for Higher Education (LIHE).
The incoming administration noted that this list represents an initial phase of a broader organisational overhaul. Several current personnelโ€”including figures from the existing executive committee, the youth nursery setup, and the women’s team managementโ€”have already committed to the project but are temporarily withholding their names from publication due to ongoing procedural transitions.
To secure the club’s long-term sustainability, the new leadership group announced that it has finalised a thoroughly evaluated strategic business plan. This framework is scheduled for public release in the coming days and aims to establish strict financial stability, enhanced infrastructure, and a modern sporting direction for Birkirkara FC moving forward.

Interesting names involved

Amongst the most prominent names is Chris Cardona, a former Labor Party politician. He served as Malta’s Minister for the Economy, Investment, and Small Businesses from 2013 to 2020. His involvement signals a major push toward commercial backing and political clout for the club. It was recently confirmed that Cardona was actively approached by members to step in and revitalise the club’s administrative board after fans grew increasingly frustrated with recent sporting results. Cardona brings his fair share of controversy to proceedings and is obviously close to former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.ย

Professor Paulo Catalfamo brings international financial and academic prestige to the new structure. He is the founder and Chairman of GlobalCapital (now LifeStar Holding plc), a major financial services provider in Malta. He has also served as a professor at various universities internationally and was appointed as the honorary consul general of San Marino in Malta. His background points directly to the club’s new strategy of constructing a professional, corporate-level “business plan.” Catalmafo is also known to be close to former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who currently leads the Malta Premier League. His company has also been actively involved in organising a national marathon race in Malta. He was also involved in crypto in the ‘Blockchain Malta’ days but has since stepped back from that scene.ย

Alfred Attard holds a strong and well-known profile within Maltese football circles, primarily recognised for his extensive background as a local coach and former technical administrator. His footballing expertise bridges the gap between the incoming high-net-worth investors and the core requirements of running a successful domestic football operation. Attard was a Labour Party councilor in Birkirkara and is regularly seen as a pundit on local football TV programmes. He is currently coaching Qrendi FC, an Amateur I league side.ย

Other notable public and corporate profiles

Mr. Marwan Al Thani (Qatar): This name represents a direct link to high-tier Gulf investment, signaling an ambitious international financing stream for the Maltese club.

Elaris Advisory UAE: A prominent corporate advisory firm based in the United Arab Emirates, confirming a strategic commercial pivot toward Middle Eastern corporate backing.

Michael Bonello: A leading figure in Malta’s high-end real estate market, known as the CEO and broker of a major real estate franchise on the island.
