Prime Minister Robert Abela avoids the tough questions by Il-Każin

Prime Minister Robert Abela has avoided a debate with Alex Borg on Il-Każin, hosted by Jon Mallia and Mark Laurence Zammit of Times of Malta. The pair of journalists are asking very hard questions, putting Alex Borg on the spot. Alex Borg is being scrutinised over his pledges and fiscal estimates. The questions are also very detailed.

Alex Borg is currently defending his proposals. So far, he has criticised the government over its reckless spending and an economy that lacks productivity growth and instead depends on labour growth. He is currently defending his proposal to control population growth through a new authority. He reiterated the importance of foreign workers learning Maltese.

This is not the first time that the Prime Minister has avoided a debate with Alex Borg on Il-Każin.

Ouch. This is somewhat of a double-edged sword: on the one hand, the opposition leader has shown integrity and that he can withstand the pressure of questioning, not to mention showing that he actually has a spine. On the other hand, he was left to take all the tough questions, while his opponent takes the easy path of smiles and applause at some party event.
In a normal country, the first edge would cut sharper. In a country of illiterates, this could have been a clever move.
