Ambiguity remains on status of Srait of Hormuz after statements by Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Speaking on Iranian state television, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed that the US and the Iranian regime are close to striking a deal but downplayed its over-optimistic characterisation by President Donald Trump. The Iranian spokesperson also said that Iran will be retaining control of sea passage and instead of charging tolls, will be charging vessels environmental fees.ย 

Iranian state media had previously confirmed that the US and the Iranian regime were close to striking a deal and that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be resumed.

The Strait of Hormuz remains blocked by both sides with the US blocking the Iranian side, and Iran threatening the Omani side. Many commercial vessels remain trapped inside.

Iran is insisting on peace in Lebanon to be include as part o the deal. A 60-day ceasefire extension is also expected to be announced. Talks on nuclear issues will only commence after the first phase of the agreement that prioritises the status of Strait of Hormuz.

So far, oil is reacting positively to the news going below $90 (WTI) by the end of day.
