Labour wins 2026 General Election with 21,963-vote majority

The Labour Party has secured victory in the 2026 General Election, obtaining 158,444 first-count votes and an estimated 51.8% of the national vote, according to projections based on the completed count of all districts.

The Nationalist Party garnered 136,723 votes, equivalent to 44.7%, leaving Labour with a lead of 21,963 votes and a margin of 7.1 percentage points.

Third parties also registered their presence in the election, with Momentum obtaining 4,700 votes and ADPD securing 3,996 votes nationwide.

The result delivers a fourth consecutive electoral victory for Prime Minister Robert Abela and the Labour Party, although the gap between the two major parties is considerably narrower than the 39,000-vote margin recorded in the 2022 General Election.

Labour dominates southern districts

Labour maintained overwhelming support in its traditional strongholds, winning all districts in the south and harbour regions by substantial margins.

The party’s strongest performance came in the Second District, where it secured 67% of the vote compared to the PN’s 30%.

Labour also recorded commanding victories in the Third District (66%), Fourth District (64%) and Fifth District (61%), confirming its continued dominance in areas such as ลปejtun, Marsaxlokk, Paola, Tarxien, ลปabbar and Birลผebbuฤกa.

In the First District, Labour obtained 55% of the vote against the PN’s 42%, while in the Sixth District, which includes Qormi, Luqa and Siฤกฤกiewi, Labour secured 57%.

The Seventh District proved more competitive, with Labour winning 53% against the PN’s 44%.

PN retains northern and central strongholds

The Nationalist Party continued to dominate several northern and central districts, recording its strongest result in the Tenth District, where it secured 61% of the vote against Labour’s 34%.

The PN also achieved comfortable victories in the Ninth District (56%) and Eleventh District (55%), which include localities such as Sliema, San ฤ iljan, Swieqi, Mosta and Attard.

In the Eighth District, covering areas including Balzan, Naxxar, Lija and parts of Birkirkara, the PN obtained 54% of the vote.

The Twelfth District, comprising St Paul’s Bay, Mellieฤงa and Mฤกarr, also remained in Nationalist hands, with the party securing 53% against Labour’s 43%.

Gozo produces closest contest

The closest battle of the election was recorded in the Thirteenth District, covering Gozo and Comino.

The Nationalist Party narrowly edged Labour by just 144 votes, securing 13,753 votes (49%) compared to Labour’s 13,609 votes (49%).

Although Labour retained the third seat by just 4 votes, the PN still secured a third seat on the district due to a Constitutional mechanism.

Third parties remain below 3%

While Momentum and ADPD increased their visibility during the campaign, both parties remained well below the threshold required to challenge the dominance of the two major political parties.

Momentum’s strongest performance came in the Tenth District, where it obtained 820 votes, while ADPD recorded its highest tally in the Twelfth District with 593 votes.

Combined, the two parties accounted for approximately 2.8% of all votes cast.

Turnout remains strong

The election was marked by a strong voter turnout of approximately 87.4%, representing an increase over the record-low turnout registered in 2022.

More than 306,000 valid votes were counted across Malta and Gozo, although around 15,500 registered voters did not collect their voting document before polling day.
