The Labour Party has won the 2026 General Election by around 18,000 to 20,000 votes according to initial estimates. Labour Party agents declared victory around 11.15am with shouts of “Viva l Labour” and celebrating their party’s win.
This is Labourโs fourth consecutive general election victory, extending its period in office that began in 2013. This is the first time in history that the Labour Party has won a fourth consecutive general election.ย ย
Turnout was approximately 87.4%, slightly higher than in 2022 which registered an 85.5% turnout.
Initial indications are that the PN improved their showing in the 2nd to 5th districts where they may be close to regaining the second seat which they lost in the last three elections. Until around 50% of votes were counted, the 13th District of Gozo appeared to be swinging slightly to the PN.
The result gives Prime Minister Robert Abela a renewed mandate, but the reduced majority compared with Labourโs dominant wins in recent elections may become a major talking point once the final vote breakdown is published.
Campaign debates focused heavily on housing affordability, migration, infrastructure pressure, and quality-of-life concerns despite Maltaโs strong economic performance. The Nationalist Party ran a strong campaign but also focused on several handouts in attempts to emulate the governing partyโs largesse.
