The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah is currently protesting against the EU rules on asylum applications, which will enable countries to deport migrants from the point where they travelled and not their country origin. The new regulation, approved which came into force on June 12th is called the “safe third-country concept” and can be found here.
The Libyan Prime Minister told the Libyan press that Libya should not be used by Europe to house illegal immigrants. Both Libyan administrations have been blackmailing the EU with immigrant arrivals whilst demanding funds on the false pretense that the Libyan military and authorities can not control the coast.
The European Parliament is set to vote tomorrow on a provisional political agreement reached earlier this month between Parliament and Council negotiators on a new EU Return Regulation. The provisional deal was reached on 1 June 2026 between Parliament and Council negotiators. This reform aims to make the deportation of third-country nationals who have no legal right to stay in the EU faster, simpler, and more effective.
The new EU migration rules introduce mandatory screening of irregular arrivals (including identity, security, health, and vulnerability checks) within seven days, faster asylum and border procedures with stricter obligations to apply in the first country of entry (limiting secondary movements), quicker return decisions, expanded use of safe third countries for refusals, and stronger enforcement tools such as return hubs and longer detention periods under the complementary Return Regulation.
The new rules have been opposed by the Greens, the Left and also the S&D groups, but some S&D members, including Malta’s Alex Agius Saliba is supporting the new measures. The Nationalist Party’s Peter Agius, who is a member of the PP, is also supporting the new regulations.
Up to 1000 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya and north Africa to Europe illegaly.
