In one of his first acts as Minister for Home Affairs, the new minister responsible for the Police is promoting the rounding up and expulsion of illegal immigrants on Facebook. This media practice by the Police, where they send photos to the press of police officers apprehending immigrants in the streets, is a very recent phenomenon.
This PR practice is very unnecessary because it fuel racist sentiments, and it doesn’t do anything other than to humiliate the subjects of the photo. The Police can serve themselves simply by sending statistical figures, instead they are sending photos seemingly with the aim to show the Police at work.
I’m pretty sure that the Police media officer, Brandon Pisani, is intentionally spreading these photos out of spite against these immigrants, while indulging his own racist sentiments. I remember Brandon Pisani’s father working at the Union Press, writing the most xenophobic articles imaginable during the period when boatloads of illegal immigrants were arriving on our shores for the first time.
The problem is that these individuals are not criminals in any traditional sense. Their crime is illegal entry into our country, with most of them genuinely searching for a better life. There is no reason why we should humiliate them.
The new Police Minister does not show the same concern for actual security threats, such as dangerous Libyan warlords who are wanted back in Libya but are being allowed to assault and terrorise Maltese citizens because, according to the Libyan warlord himself, he is “protected by the government”.
Socialism seems to be valid only when we are in Opposition.
