There have been little updates by the government or the authorities about a supposed ongoing criminal investigation on the Fortina deal which granted public land at a more than a 50% discount to the Fortina Group in Sliema for he construction of more accommodation rooms and even a lido.
Fortina Group are major donors of the Labour Party.
However we have some new information that is very relevant to this case and it involves the previous Lands CEO, Carlo Mifsud who executed the deal with Fortina Group. Firstly, we have confirmation that Carlo Mifsud was removed from his post at Lands by then Lands Minister Ian Borg after he entered office in 2017. Subsequently, Carlo Mifsud, aided by Fortina Group, entered the catering business and today, he is running several catering outlets in the Sliema and Saint Julian’s area. One of the catering outlets that he is currently running is called Brunch Bunch in Swieqi.
However that is not all. Carlo Mifsud is also restoring a building in Saint Julian’s to turn it into a hotel.
Carlo Mifsud was fired by Minister Ian Borg from the Lands authority, specifically over the Fortina deal as the Minister very quickly realised that deal was unusual and irregular.
His impressive rise into the catering and accomodation business happened right after he left the Lands authority. Previously he has very little experience in business and his small business ventures failed before he took up a job at Vassallo Builders but was subsequently fired from his job. He then took on a role at the Lands authority.
Carlo Mifsud is also a Labour Party activist and is a Saint Julian’s Local Councilor. He is also a member of the Council of the University of Malta. Supposedly, he is under criminal investigation over the Fortina deal. He is also involved in the local sports scene.
