Nationalist Party demands publication of gas contract with BP

The Nationalist Party has issued a statement today demanding the full publication of the government’s contract with BP. This is the way to go. As far as I know, this is the first time that the Nationalist Party has formally and officially demanded full transparency on the government’s energy contracts.

Finally, politics has begun moving in the right direction on this matter, after we have been pressing the Maltese government for full transparency on Malta’s energy contracts for years without any reply.

Hopefully, the Nationalist Party does not let go of this.

Full statement below.

Statement by the Partit Nazzjonalista

Government must immediately publish the price and conditions of the gas supply agreement with BP
After allowing the country’s gas supply to reach the brink, the Government has signed an agreement for just nine months; this once again raises serious doubts about the security of Malta’s energy supply

The Government must immediately publish the price, conditions and all guarantees linked to the new LNG supply agreement with BP.

Yesterday, during a phone-in on Super One, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that the Government had signed an agreement for the supply of gas to the power station, just weeks before the existing arrangement with SOCAR expires in August, after having ignored for years an expiry date it had known about for a decade.

Now, the Government has signed an agreement that will cover only nine months, without providing any details about the price at which it will be purchasing gas.

The Partit Nazzjonalista recognises that energy is a strategic sector for the country, both for families and for businesses. That is why people have a right to know: why did the Government drag its feet until the very last minute to negotiate the supply of gas? And above all, at what price?

The situation into which this Government has led the country, even in the energy sector, is once again the result of the approach Robert Abela is taking in several crucial areas: management by crisis.

In energy too, instead of planning for the long term, the Government allowed the country to reach the brink and is now blowing its own trumpet over a temporary, short-term agreement, without the public knowing how much it will cost.

The Partit Nazzjonalista therefore expects the Government to be transparent with the people, publish this agreement, and state the price being paid for gas.

The Government must stop hiding behind PR exercises aimed at making people forget that it has no long-term plan in any sector. The Labour Government had promised that by this year Malta would have a pipeline for gas supply so that the country would no longer depend on the tanker in Marsaxlokk. But here too, it has failed.

In 2026, the Maltese and Gozitan people expect not only that their Government gives them peace of mind about the country’s energy supply in the years ahead, but they also have a right to know how much this will cost the country and what the plans are for the future.

The Partit Nazzjonalista hopes that the Government will be transparent in the energy sector and reassure everyone that Malta’s energy supply is not at risk, especially after thousands of families yesterday began this summer with candles and fans. The Partit Nazzjonalista hopes that the Maltese and Gozitan people, and all those who live in or visit our country, will not have to face yet another summer of power cuts.

This is certainly not their dream.
