Russia suffers from widespread fuel shortages: US sanctions on Russian oil back in place

Russia is suffering from widespread fuel shortages as Ukraine’s campaign against the Russian oil and gas industry begins to have a serious impact on domestic fuel supplies. Long queues at petrol stations, including in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, are being filmed across Russia, with many Russian citizens complaining that they cannot find fuel, while others report that the fuel still available has become extremely expensive.

Meanwhile, pressure on Russian oil exports and refinery capacity continues to grow as Ukraine intensifies its strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure. The disruption is now affecting not only the Russian economy, but also domestic fuel distribution and military logistics.

The Russian government is currently prioritising fuel allocation for the army, missiles and drones used in its war against Ukraine. On the night of 26–27 June, Russia launched 129 drones at Ukrainian cities, with strikes and falling debris reported in several cities.

On the front line, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to make marginal gains, including in the southern theatre at Zaporizhia. Russian forces, meanwhile, are concentrating their efforts around Kostiantynivka in the Donbas region, where they are trying to pressure and gradually encircle the embattled city.

US sanctions on Russian oil have also come back into force after the temporary suspension introduced during the war on Iran has ended without renewal.
