We will be discussing Europe’s new climate normal more frequently as record temperatures continue to be recorded year after year. But this discussion is useless unless we address the actual perpetrators behind the world’s ongoing greenhouse-gas emissions that are heating the planet.
The main culprit is China, and all the numbers and evidence show this clearly. On a long-term basis, greenhouse-gas emissions from Europe are going down, while greenhouse-gas emissions from China have risen exponentially.

EDGAR Report (European Commission JRC, 2025 edition) — Total anthropogenic GHG emissions (excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry/LULUCF):
- Global total: 53.2 Gt CO₂eq
- China: 15.54 Gt CO₂eq (29.2% of global total)
- United States: 5.91 Gt (11.1%)
- India: 4.37 Gt (8.2%)
- EU27: 3.16 Gt (5.9%)
- Russia: 2.58 Gt (4.8%)
