The Maltese government has begun applying the EU’s Media Freedom Act after requesting that all press outlets disclose their government advertising revenue.
We are very concerned that these submissions may not include all forms of government funding, and we urge the Judge and the committee responsible for applying the law to include all government funding, not just public advertising.
We remain cautious and suspicious of the government’s intentions, and we will closely monitor developments to ensure that the directive is applied to the letter. Individuals such as Saviour Balzan cannot be allowed to disclose only public advertising revenue; they should be required to disclose all government funding, including contracts for work and payments for any services they provide.
In addition, all of this data should eventually be made public.
We are prepared to take any legal action necessary if there are any violations of this directive, and we thank the European Commission for pressing the Maltese government to enforce this law.
