Belgium has scored 4 goals against one goal of the United States of America in the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 16 of the knockout stage. Belgium will proceed to the quarterfinals against Spain, while the USA is eliminated from the competition. The game was played in Seattle, US.
The game follows a scandalous precedent in which US President Donald Trump compelled FIFA to review (and ultimately suspend the ban from) a red card given to American player Folarin Balogun during the game between the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Round of 32). FIFA had initially upheld the one-match suspension, but President Trump publicly asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino for a review, arguing it was not a clear foul. FIFA’s disciplinary committee later suspended the ban on a one-year probation, allowing Balogun to play.
Commentators joked that FIFA went to the USA and managed to become even more corrupt.
The goals by Belgium were scored by Charles De Ketelaere (brace), Hans Vanaken, and Romelu Lukaku. The goal by the US was scored by Malik Tillman.
