Libyan officials travel to Malta for reunification talks: Massad Boulous joins talks

Malta’s Foreign Minister Chris Fearne hosted US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Massad Boulous and Libya officials from both governments who have travelled to Malta today to participate in ongoing reunification talks kickstarted by Washington. Officials present included Tripoli’s Minister of State for Communications and Political Affairs, Walid Al-Lafi, and also their National Security Adviser Ibrahim Dbeibah (nephew of the Lib an Prime Minister Abdul Haid Dbiebeh) and picture above.

The talks, however, did not yield any results and, as expected, were characterised by an uncompromising stance from the Tripolitan side, which insists that any reunification plan should not preserve the rump military dictatorship of the Haftar family in Benghazi.

The talks nevertheless marked a return of Maltaโ€™s role as a minor power broker, retaining a rare position as a European intermediary amid a lack of other brokers in the negotiations. Italy was only marginally involved in the talks in Washington.

The pro-Tripoli press covered the event positively, but the pro-Haftar press is yet to produce its coverege.
