Talks in Washington with Benghazi’s Deputy Military Commander Saddam Haftar are falling flat as the pro-Tripoli press accuse Washington of elevating the Haftar family and giving them recognition. In addition, the press is describing the iniative as led by President Trump’s special envoy Massad Boulous and it involves a power sharing agreement between Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeiba and Khalifa Haftar: an arrangement which is considered as highly unlikely at best.
Al-Jazeera, which has traditionally supported the Tripoli government has also reported about the talks with skepticism. Italy was also invited to join the talks. Egypt has been nominally supportive of the talks.
Meanwhile, the Libyan Prime Minister has flown to the UAE and met with the UAE’s leader Mohammed bin-Zayed. The UAE is a sponsor and supporter of the Haftar dictatorship in Benghazi. US President Donald Trump has also been a long-time support of the Haftar family at the expense of Tripoli.
