Ambassador Fabrizio Saggio, the Italian National Security Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister, represented the Italian government in Washington for talks on Libya’s reunification alongside President Trump’s Envoy for Africa, Massad Boulos, and Benghazi’s Deputy Military Commander, Saddam Haftar.
The absence of representatives from Tripoli remains conspicuous, and it is unclear what these talks are intended to achieve, given that the Haftar family has entrenched itself in Benghazi as a dictatorial military regime backed by a rump parliament. US President Donald Trump has been an old supporter of Khalifa Haftar.
Meanwhile, in Tripoli, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh may have successfully curbed the power of illegitimate armed groups in the capital city, but democratic elections still seem far-fetched.
The Italian government has not issued a statement about the meeting.
The Italian press outlet which has been mostly well informed about this meetings is Il Foglio and had very little to say about this meeting.
