Sliema have successfully retained the Men’s National Beach Soccer Championship after defeating La Playa de Arena 3–1 after extra time in an enthralling final played at Bajja s-Sabiħa, Birżebbuġa.
The championship decider lived up to expectations, with both teams producing an entertaining contest packed with chances. After 36 minutes of play, the score remained locked at 1–1, sending the final into extra time where Sliema showed their experience and quality to secure back-to-back national titles.
Sliema broke the deadlock through Mantas Makutunovicius, who displayed excellent composure by turning sharply before beating goalkeeper Jonathan Grech with a clinical finish.
La Playa de Arena responded positively and found the equaliser through Karl Caruana, whose expertly taken free-kick brought his side level and ensured the final remained finely balanced heading into the closing stages of normal time.
With the title still up for grabs, Sliema produced the decisive moments in extra time. Makutunovicius struck again to complete his brace and restore his side’s advantage before veteran Mark Camilleri put the result beyond doubt with a late goal, sealing a memorable 3–1 victory and confirming Sliema as champions once again.
Following the final whistle, Malta Beach Soccer Association President Mauro Camilleri Darmanin presented the championship trophy to Sliema captain Matthew Agius, as the Blues celebrated another successful beach soccer campaign.
