The US tries to broker peace deal between Libyan governments

The US is trying to broker a peace and unity deal between the two separate Libyan governments in what appears to be an attempt by US President Donald Trump to add to his list of brokered peace agreements. However, the absence of the western government of Tripoli in the discussions remains conspicuous.

Deputy-Commander of the illegitimate Libyan army in eastern Libyan, Saddam Haftar, has travelled to Washington to meet with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for talks on a potential peace deal. It is unclear how such a deal would pan out given that the Haftar family has entrenched itself in Benghazi and Eastern Libya with dictatorial and military rule.

The meeting in Washington also included President Trump’s special envoy for Africa and the Arab world Massa Boulos.

Pro-Haftar Libyan propaganda outlets are celebrating the meeting as a diplomatic coup.
