The British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has urged the “international community” to intervene and halt the offensive on the Sudanese city of El Obeid by the genocidal Rapid Support Forces. However, in a similar vein to her shadow, Priti Patel, Secretary Cooper has failed to mention that the main supplier and sponsor of the RSF is the UAE.
The siege of El Obeid could be lifted quickly if the UAE stopped supplying arms to the RSF, which it has continuously supported throughout its genocidal war in Sudan.
El Obeid is currently being besieged by the RSF with drones which have targeted civilian infrastructure including power plants, medical facilities and fuel tanks. Civilians inside the city are living in a difficult situation as they struggle to find food supplies. Humanitarian aid is very limited as most of the routes to the city have been closed.
Concerns are rising that if the RSF capture El Obeid, a repeat of the Al-Fashir massacre will occur resulting in the murder of tens of thousands of civilians.
