President Macron continues landmark visit to Syria despite terrorist attack

French President Emmanuel Macron continued his landmark visit to Syria despite a terrorist attack near his hotel. At least two bombs were detonated near the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus, where he was staying, injuring up to 18 people. Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab went to the scene following the attack.

The visit marks the first by a Western leader and head of state to Syria following the ousting of dictator Bashar al-Assad. President Macron was accompanied by a large business delegation, including TotalEnergies and CMC GMC, with the aim of securing investment for Syria’s reconstruction.

Syria’s state news agency quoted President Ahmed al-Sharaa as saying that several agreements aimed at reconstruction were signed, including in the infrastructure and aviation sectors. The French President affirmed his commitment to a “sovereign Syria, united in its diversity and at peace with its neighbors”.

President Macron headed to Ankara, Turkey for the NATO summit following his trip to Syria which has started today.
