European leaders and the US President have gathered in Ankara, Turkey for the annual NATO summit. Several important announcements were made including on further military aid to Ukraine.
NATO leaders have pledged up to €70 billion of military aid to Ukraine for this year which includes a new round of anti-air defence missiles and also drones. Ukraine signed a drone production deal with Estonia, which follows a similar deal signed with Latvia in June. The same aid packages have also been pledged for 2027 making the total pledged up to €140 billion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call for Ukraine to join NATO, which is currently being opposed by the US, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia.
US President Donald Trump announced that the US will be removing the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), paving the way for the sale of F-35s to Turkey which has been vehemently opposed by Israel. The announcement follows a previous pledged by the US President, and said that the US doesn’t want to sanction friends. Trump also reiterated his calls for the US to control Greenland. Greenland’s security is also on the agenda but no one within NATO is entertaining Trump’s request.
No US troop withdrawals are expected from Europe after the proposal was shot down by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during internal cabinet discussions at the White House, according to several press reports.
