Prince Harry has lost a landmark case against the Daily Mail over alleged “phone hacking”, in which he accused the British newspaper of unlawfully obtaining information from his phone. In a judgment of more than 400 pages, the British Court ruled that the claimant had not presented any evidence to prove his case.
The British press is reporting that the case cost Prince Harry up to £50 million.
Other claimants who filed the case along with Prince Harry included Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Elton John and his husband David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost and Simon Hughes. The claimants argued that the publishes Associated Newspapers, the publisher of Daily Mail had acquired private information illegally through phone hacking and other deceptive methods including by hiring private investigators who disguised their identity.
In a statement issued following the judgment, Associated Newspapers editor-in-chief Paul Dacre described Prince Harry as a “confused and angry young man” and said he felt sorry that the Duke of Sussex had been drawn into the case. Dacre called it a “bitter irony” that Harry had sued the publisher, arguing that Princess Diana had regarded the Daily Mail as “her paper” and that it had supported her during her acrimonious separation from Prince Charles.
