Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni goes to Palermo to beef up security: Giovanni Falcone’s car lent to Fondazione Falcone

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has travelled to Palermo, Sicily and convened a Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security involvign both the police and armed forces to coordinate the increase in security in Palermo following repeated attacks by organised crime on businesses in the city.

Sicily has recently been gripped by several attacks carried out by organised crime, terrorising civilians and businesses. The Italian Prime Minister said that the authorities had apprehended individuals who distributed weapons, including Kalashnikovs, to organised criminals. She said that the State is present and will crack down heavily on these activities. She also announced additional funding for security in Palermo and new surveillance systems in public places considered to be at high risk.

Among other measures, including an increase in the number of police officers and security personnel, she also announced an expansion of efforts to confiscate assets from organised crime.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also attended the unveiling of the Fiat Croma in which anti-Mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone and his wife, Francesca Morvillo, were travelling when they were killed in the 1992 Capaci bombing. The vehicle, which was severely damaged in the explosion, has been placed on loan with the Falcone Foundation and will form part of the permanent exhibition at the Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino Museum of the Present in Palermo.
