President Trump declares that US forces will take over the Strait of Hormuz: Brent Crude futures at $83.5

US President Donald Trump has announced that US forces will be taking over the Strait of Hormuz and also charge a 20% toll on ships passing through the strait to pay for the security. The announcement followed another round of weekend strikes in the Persian Gulf by US forces against Iranian military targets.

Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi said that US President Trump is right and that whoever controls the strait should levy tolls on commercial shipping passing through the strait to fund its security, reiterating Iran’s demand to impose a toll on ships passing through the strait.

Oil went higher with the news with Brent Crude futures going up to $83.5 and WTI at $78.3.

Yesterday, the EU High Representative reiterated that shipping passing through the strait should be free from tolls.
