Floriana’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to a disappointing end on Tuesday night after they were comprehensively beaten 5-1 by Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium, with the Irish champions overturning a two-goal first-leg deficit to progress 5-3 on aggregate.
Daniel Portela’s men travelled to Dublin buoyed by last week’s impressive 2-0 victory at the Centenary Stadium, but they were unable to cope with Shamrock Rovers’ relentless intensity as the hosts produced a commanding display to book their place in the second qualifying round against Armenia’s Ararat-Armenia.
Floriana will now continue their European adventure in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round.
The Irish champions made their intentions clear from the outset, pressing aggressively and forcing Floriana onto the back foot.
Graham Burke fired narrowly wide after just four minutes before Gabriel Cioletti produced an excellent save to deny John McGovern as the pressure mounted.
The breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute when Jack Byrne’s corner was met by Lee Grace, who rose highest to head past Cioletti and reduce the aggregate deficit.
Floriana responded in impressive fashion just six minutes later. Moustapha Jah burst clear down the flank before picking out Tomislav Gudelj, who calmly slotted home to restore the Maltese champions’ two-goal aggregate cushion.
The equaliser briefly silenced the home crowd, but Shamrock Rovers quickly regained control.
Cioletti was again called into action to keep out Burke before the hosts levelled the score on the night in the 28th minute. Adam Brennan delivered an inviting cross from the left and McGovern headed home to make it 2-1.
Floriana survived further pressure before the interval, with Cioletti producing another outstanding stop, tipping Byrne’s powerful effort onto the crossbar in stoppage time.
Any hopes of settling after the break disappeared almost immediately.
Less than a minute into the second half, Dylan Watts found the unmarked McGovern inside the penalty area and the striker made no mistake, firing home his second goal of the evening to level the tie at 3-3 on aggregate.
McGovern came close to completing his hat-trick minutes later, but Cioletti once again came to Floriana’s rescue with another fine save.
The decisive moment arrived on the hour mark. Burke surged into the penalty area and, after seeing his initial effort blocked, reacted quickest to hammer home the rebound and put Shamrock Rovers ahead in the tie for the first time.
Floriana had a golden opportunity to swing the momentum back in their favour when substitute Kenan Dervisagic met Armin Kurtalic’s cross from close range, but the Bosnian striker volleyed over the crossbar.
The miss proved costly.
With 16 minutes remaining, captain Jack Byrne capped an outstanding display by rifling home Shamrock Rovers’ fifth goal, sealing an emphatic comeback and sparking celebrations among the home supporters.
Despite the disappointing result, Floriana remain in European competition and will now turn their attention to the UEFA Conference League, where they will look to regroup and extend their continental campaign.
