Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has resolved his political crisis at home by replacing his Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, with Mykhailo Drapatyi.
Major-General Drapartyi is famous for his armed charge at a barricade during liberation of Mariupol when it was first occupied by Russian forces in 2014.
In 2014, during Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and its intervention in the Donbas, Russian-backed separatists seized Mariupol’s city hall and other public buildings. Ukrainian forces retook the city and its key administrative buildings on 13 June 2014. Mariupol was re-captured during the Russian invasion of 2022 with up to 100,000 Ukrainian civilians killed or missing as a result of the new Russian takeover.
The political crisis begun when President Zelensky removed Mykhailo Fedorov as Defence Minister. The tech executive will now still serve in a senior role but it is unclear yet what role he will be serving. He is mostly known for modernising the Ukrainian Armed Forces with drones and modern technology giving a significant to the UAF over the Russian army.
The previous Commander-in-Chief clashed with the previous Minister of Defense as the former was accused of resisting reforms.
The Ukrainian President has not yet named the new Defence Minister.
