Protest held in Manoel Island against illegal and private developments

Numerous NGOs including the Ramblers Association and Moviment Graffitti and citizens gathered at Manoel Island yesterday to protest the ongoing takeover of the island by private interests.

The protest was prompted by the Planning Authority’s decision to sanction illegally built padel courts after the island was returned to public ownership.

The government is now also planning to build a permanent yacht marina on the island and grant its concession to a private operator.

NGOs and citizens are alarmed that, just weeks after taking office, the Labour government is going back on its promise to turn Manoel Island into a national park, while private interests are moving quickly to secure their own interests and a share of the public property.

Also present for the protest was ADPD Leader Sandra Gauci.
