A Police Sergeant suffered head injuries after being assaulted while carrying out his duties in St Julian’s early on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 4 am in St George’s Street, where police officers intervened in an argument involving four Maltese nationals—two men and two women.
While officers were attempting to calm the situation, one of the men allegedly remained aggressive and was arrested.
At that point, another Maltese man, who had not been involved in the original argument but is believed to have known the arrested person, allegedly began punching the Police Sergeant in the head.
The Sergeant defended himself as other officers attempted to stop the assault, leading to a commotion during which the alleged aggressor also sustained injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Police Sergeant was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
Police investigations are ongoing.
