Burglaries in Malta went down by 18.4% in 2024 compared to their 2019 level going down from 5,187 to 4,235 according to the latest Eurostat figures. Comparatively, they went down more significantly than the EU’s average which went down by 3.1%, falling from approximately 5.43 million in 2019 to 5.26 million in 2024.
The largest percentage decreases between 2019 and 2024 were recorded in Slovakia, where burglaries fell by 47.6%; Czechia, where they declined by 46.1%; and Greece, where they dropped by 26.7%. Meanwhile, the largest increases were recorded in Luxembourg, where burglaries rose by 83.6%; Estonia, where they increased by 47.7%; and Germany, where they rose by 12.1%.
Between 2023 and 2024, the total number of burglaries recorded across the EU fell by approximately 2%, from 5.37 million to 5.26 million. Malta, however, recorded a year-on-year increase of 14%, with burglaries rising from 3,716 in 2023 to 4,235 in 2024, despite remaining considerably below their 2019 level.
The figures refer to absolute numbers of offences recorded by the police rather than population-adjusted crime rates. Eurostat also warns that differences in legislation, reporting behaviour and police-recording practices can limit direct comparisons between countries.
