European interior and security ministers met online for an extraordinary Council meeting chaired by the Irish Presidency in response to the Ceuta border crisis. The meeting was called by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and many European countries, including Malta, endorsed the call.
Following the meeting, Malta issued a statement declaring its support for and solidarity with Spain. It also applauded the actions taken by Spain and the Moroccan authorities to repatriate the irregular migrants who crossed the border last week.
The statement goes on to include some political posturing, saying that Europe needs to strengthen its response and its borders in the face of evolving threats.
Nothing new was concluded at the meeting, which was called by the Italian premier, who took advantage of the crisis in Ceuta to make political gains at home by emphasising her strong stance against irregular migration.
