Let’s be serious about illegal fishing

Labour MEP Thomas Bajada has produced a social media video, complete with dramatic music and all the flair, about illegal fishing threatening dolphin fish (lampuki). He filmed the video while in Catania, Sicily, and probably became aware that many fishermen in Sicily catch dolphin fish illegally out of season and sell them before they have fully matured.

For Labour Party politicians, everything has to be propaganda, but Bajada misses the point because he fails to provide any solutions or proposals on how to curb illegal fishing.

Malta also faces potential problems with overfishing across its maritime borders, which affects fish stocks within our waters.

A serious discussion led by responsible and mature politicians would be welcome, but for Labour, everything is a propaganda opportunity.

I do not expect Thomas Bajada to fully grasp the seriousness of our porous borders and the lawlessness in our waters. He is the kind of politician who would vote against defence expenditure assuming that without it there would be more money to spend on pensions. He has also voted against Russian sanctions. It is politicians like Thomas Bajada, who believe that defence comes free and cannot grasp complex problems, who think that Europe’s defence is unnecessary and security is executed by political posturing.

He is an MEP, he has the power to discuss with Italian counterparts and the EU in general about this problem. All of this drama is completely useless.

Thank you, Mark. An article that makes my daily reading of TMH an occasional delight. You hit the nail on the head. I’m not so sure your article will penetrate Mr Bajada’s overly-thick skull.
