Malta’s Foreign Minister says Ceuta crisis is only a small part of a larger problem

Speaking to CNN, Malta’s Foreign Minister, Chris Fearne, said that the crisis in Ceuta represents only a small part of the wider migration crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. He said that the incident brought European partners together, despite the initial reaction being one of shock.

“The population of Ceuta basically doubled in an instant,” he said.

The Foreign Minister offered his condolences to the relatives of all those who lost their lives in the incident. He said that Europe should not turn a blind eye to asylum seekers and should provide them with protection where needed, but added that border controls must continue to be strengthened.

At least 72 migrants died last week as they tried to cross to Ceuta from Morocco.
