Opposition MP demands implementation of reforms of the the Daphne Caruana Galizia Public Inquiry

Opposition and Nationalist MP Michael Piccinino is demanding the government to implement the reforms recommended by the public inquiry on the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The public inquiry had concluded that Joseph Muscat’s Labour administration had created a culture of impunity that led to the murder of the journalist and recommended a series of reforms to improve governance and the rule-of-law.

The Nationalist Party had previously proposed implementing these reforms.

Some of these measures proposed included the introduction of a law on unexplained wealth, introduction of laws against abuse in public office and also laws against the obstruction of justice. The public inquiry also proposed stronger protections for journalists including by enshrining journalistic freedom enshrined in the Constitution.

Michael Piccinino said that the Labour government has made great efforts not to implement these reforms and that, if we really believe we have learnt from the related events, the reforms proposed by the inquiry should be implemented.
