Military now patrolling Paceville and Swieqi with Police

Members of the Armed Forces of Malta have begun patrolling Swieqi and Paceville following a government announcement last week that the military will be deployed in Swieqi to quell the problem of rowdy youths and tourists.

No announcements of any arrests have been made so far.

Military patrols are extremely unusual, and this is the first time in decades that the military have been asked to assist the Police on matters of public order. The last time the military assisted the Police on matters of public order was during the government protests in November – December 2019, but this was a very different scenario involving civil and political protests during a major political crisis.

Rowdy youths in Swieqi and Paceville are mainly a Police problem, as it involves disorderly and drunken behaviour, vandalism, noise, theft with violence on occasion, and only on very rare occasions fatal or deadly violence.
