Minister Glenn Bedingfield sends the military in Swieqi to control rowdy foreign youths

Banana Republic just hit a new bottom standard, as the government has announced that it will be sending the Armed Forces of Malta to address the problem of rowdy youths in Swieqi.

The military has no remit in keeping law and order unless in cases when national security is at stake. They are not even allowed to touch civilians or apprehend suspects, let alone take over the role of the Maltese Police.

This is Labour government stupidity at its best: sending the army to resolve civilian issues is mostly the method of Banana Republics where state institutions are weak and, in some cases, even absent.

The military have no business making sure rowdy youths are not drunk and disorderly in Swieqi – this is supposed to be the job of the Police, which apparently have failed to do completely, and now the military is filling in.

Swieqi local councillors are celebrating this decision, but at what price? Using the military for civilian issues is literally the work of dictators and banana republics.

A new bottom has been registered.

Malta is a failed State par excellence. Only recolonization can save it from its shabby and hopeless self.

  3. As an aside, AFM personnel do actually have the powers of the police in the execution of their duties (LN 66 of 1980 which is still in force). That isn’t the point, what is the point is that the police seem incapable of controlling a public order situation without support from the military. It speaks to incompetence on the part of police and political leadership as well as an absolute lack of appreciation on the part of the minister that uniformed soldiers policing the streets in response to a bunch of drunk and unruly tourists looks idiotic. But I bet it makes Sturmbannfuhrer Beddingfield feel really tough………
