Britain’s Green Party Leader calls for Russian-styled press-control laws

Britain’s Green Party Leader Zack Polanski is calling for Russian-styled control-laws over the press in reaction to Jason Arday’s death. Polanski accuses the British press of racism and of hounding out Jason Arday.

Zack Polanski is supporting a petition calling for a ban on foreign-owned media, for media to be registered under a regulator, and for donations to be published in real time. The petition was started by anti-media campaigners Donnachadh McCarthy, Liz Pendleton and Caspar Hughes, who have been campaigning for the Media Sovereignty Act.

Polanski attended a vigil in Trafalgar Square for Jason Arday where politicians like Diane Abbott condemned the press for their “vicious campaign”. Protestors called for a public inquiry against the press.

Toby Young, Director of the Free Speech Union and Associate Editor of The Spectator rebutted Polanski’s claims and said that the claim that the press spreads misinformation, is itself misinformation. Speaking to SKY News, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that this is a moment for reflection and not to rush to conclusions.

The Chancellor of Cambridge University, speaking to the press about the issue for the first timeย  about the issue said that: โ€œI do believe it is possible to hold to two principles at the same time: to believe in the importance of academic integrity, and where criticisms of plagiarism arise, about any academic, whoever they are, ensure that they are rigorously investigated. And also to refuse to join in a racist feeding frenzy over a particular academic.โ€
