Yesterday, Romanian F-16 fighter jets struck a Russian unmanned surface vehicle (USV), which was loaded with explosives and loitering just a few hundred meters from the Neptune Deep offshore natural gas platform in the Black Sea.
One of the aircraft destroyed the maritime drone with its onboard cannon, neutralising the threat to the critical energy infrastructure and the hundreds of workers on site, roughly 80 nautical miles east of Constanศa. Romanian authorities confirmed the vessel was not of Ukrainian origin, and President Nicuศor Dan condemned Russia’s intensifying actions saying the latest act endangered the lives of workers.ย
EU Commissioner President Ursula von Der Leyen said that the latest action by Russia seeks to unsettle European citizens and divide them. She highlited the EU’s efforts to mobilise funds as part of the Readiness 2030 Agenda to ensure that European states have the capabilities to defend their borders.
This is the latest incident of a Russian drone straying into Romanian airspace and territory with at least six incidents reported this year alone. During the weekend a Spanish F-18 fighter jet struck down another Russian drone in Romanian airspace in Galati.
