If there is still any hope for justice, reason and basic sensibility to prevail in Malta, then today’s dark day, 2 September 2026, should at least be followed by some semblance of institutional decency: Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg should resign tomorrow with her exit paving the way for a new beginning.
Victoria Buttigieg has failed consistently, including through what amounts to institutional cover-up, but she has now also failed in the most important and consequential case she was expected to win. That is, after all, her job: to prosecute cases successfully in Court. Having failed in this historic case, her continued presence in office would only signal the willing and conscious favouring by the State of organised crime through a dysfunctional and failing institution.
