The Nationalist Party is raising concerns over rising youth unemployment. Latest NSO figures show youth unemployment edging up slightly.
Three Nationalist Party MPs, Julian Borg, Annabelle Cilia and Eve Borg Bonello, have claimed that the government is ignoring rising youth unemployment. They said it was concerning that the economy keeps growing while youth unemployment is increasing and taking an increasingly large share of the unemployment figure. Borg is the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Employment, Cilia is the PN spokesperson for Employment, while Borg Bonello is the Shadow Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme.
Statistics show that the unemployment rate among youths aged between 15 and 24 has reached 9.8%, compared with just 2.9% among those aged between 25 and 74.
In actual numbers, there were 2,763 unemployed youths in July, accounting for 23.1% of Malta’s total 11,963 unemployed persons. The remaining 9,199 unemployed persons were aged between 25 and 74. Based on the youth unemployment rate, the youth labour force stood at roughly 28,000 people, meaning that nearly 10% of young people were unemployed.
