Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne travelled to Montenegro yesterday and met with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić. In a press conference with the Prime Minister, Minister Fearne hailed European enlargement and Montenegro’s steps to join the European Union.
At the press conference, Minister Fearne also said that Malta has a special relationship with Montenegro because both are small European countries, and that Malta wants to strengthen bilateral relations with Montenegro.
Montenegro is currently at the forefront of prospective EU member-states in their membership ascension process.
During the press conference Minister Fearne also reiterated his position against the qualified-majority principle which is increasingly being used by the European Council to decide on foreign policy matters. Countries like Hungary and Slovakia have been using the veto on foreign policy matters to appease Moscow, weakening Europe’s position in the process.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also held discussions with his counterpart Foreign Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ervin Ibrahimović.
Enemalta owns a stake in the Možura wind farm near Ulcinj, Montenegro. The 2015 acquisition, made under the Joseph Muscat administration, has been the subject of corruption investigations both in Malta and Montenegro. The concession was sold to Enemalta at a sharply inflated price through the offshore company Cifidex, and that Yorgen Fenech’s company 17 Black made a multi-million-Euro profit on the transaction. The case is supposedly under investigation in Montenegro and Malta.
