In an interview with the BBC, US President Donald Trump’s Special Advisor on Africa and the Arab world, Massad Bolous, defended the leadership of the United Arab Emirates over their provisions of weapons supplies to the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan.
The US diplomat said that weapons flowing from the UAE to Sudan for the RSF are organised by private contractors and not the Emirati leadership.
The Emirati leader coordinating the UAE weapons provisions to the RSF is the Vice-President Mansour bin-Zayed al-Nahyan. The United Nations has also confirmed the Emirati weapons flow to Sudan and also mentioned Libya as one of the facilitators.
Boulos also described the RSF as a “warring party”, once again giving it an equivalence with the Sudanese state and army. Sudanese diplomats have been accusing Boulous of bias in favour of the UAE and that he can not be treated as an impartial mediator.
The US has been appeasing the Emirates over Sudan by taking an increrasingly more hostile stance against the Sudanese Armed Force and favouring peace talks with the RSF, which is currently conducting an active ethnic cleansing campaign in Darfur and intends to create its own rump state with Emirati backing.
A recent article published by The New York Times, published a dossier provided to them by the UAE’s intelligence services accusing the SAF of manufacturing chemical weapons. Doubts have been raised on whether the photos published are actually authentic and real. More on this in the coming days.
