Malta’s delegation at the United Nations General Assembly has been an uneventful party affair with a sizeable delegation of up to 12 people including the Prime Minister’s wife and daughter, the Foreign Affairs Minister and two other Ministers, Silvio Schembri and Ian Borg, with their permanent secretaries, along with other officials and propaganda personnel.
The delegation included no Maltese journalists. Instead, the Prime Minister opted to produce a series of propaganda reels including a reel with his family and another one of himself buying a $1.5 slice of pizza. Malta signed agreements with Zimbabwe and Thailand and the Prime Minister had no official bilateral meetings.
It would have been better if the trip did not take place at all.
In the Assembly the Prime Minister gave the usual grand-standing speech which is pretty much meaningless considering the current local backdrop. Someone from Tal-Qroqq is probably going to extoll the virtues of the speech unaware it includes a series of silly mistakes such as “international order” instead of “international rules-based order”.
Maltese foreign affairs is currently like our football: very endearing and interesting but without any meaningful results.
