Russia has bombed bridges in Kyiv early this morning as it escalates its attacks against Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure ahead of winter. The Northern Bridge in Kyiv was struck this morning, damaging the roadway and forcing the suspension of traffic across the bridge.
The attack on Kyiv took place as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was visiting Kyiv. The German Chancellor pledged thousands of drone interceptors to Ukraine.
Other drone and missile attack took place in Sumy (one civilian killed) and Dnipro.
Earlier this week, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned foreign diplomats to leave Kyiv, warning of the heightened attacks it plans on Ukraine’s capital city. Russia said it would continue carrying out large-scale strikes against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, while warning foreign nationals and diplomatic personnel that they would be responsible for any consequences if they remained. Most European diplomats rejected the threats and are committed to remain in Kyiv.
Meanwhile, in separate news, plague seems to have made a comebacl in Russia.
In the Irkutsk region of Siberia, laboratory worker Darya Shipilova, 28, died on 1 October after being hospitalised in Shelekhov with severe pneumonia. She worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute. Regional media say she told staff she broke a test tube of live bacteria while collecting samples, and that she first fell ill on a field trip near the Mongolian border. About 197 contacts were placed under observation. Regional authorities have described the case as a suspected especially dangerous infection and said contacts showed no signs of illness and tested negative as of 2 October. Russia’s chief sanitary officer, Anna Popova, travelled to the region. The head of neighbouring Buryatia has been quoted confirming a plague death while saying there was no outbreak in his republic.
