War in Yemen intensifies: Houthis strike oil refineries in Saudi Arabia and enter Turbah

The war in Yemen has continued to intensify during the last few days with the Houthis making significant advances as they entered the city of Taiz in the south-west of Yemen and also Turbah, which lies around 160km outside of Aden. Taiz is around 40Km outside Turbah.

The Houthis have also struck Aramco’s oil refineries in Saudi Arabia in Riyadh and also in Khurais using both ballistic missiles and drones. Oil opened around last week’s levels and Brent futures are currently at $104.77. On Friday, the G7 announced a release of 100 million barrels from reserves and more releases have been pledged. However the release, which are to be shared between Europe and members of the International Energy Agency, is to take place gradually across the coming weeks and more releases are required for significant impacts on the oil price as Saudi Arabia’s oil production continues to be disrupted.

The Yemeni government has announced a new military campaign against the Houthis but so far the government forces seem to have made no significant victories. Saudi Arabia has kept striking Sanaa and Houthi targets across Yemen.
