An excavator overturned after the ground beneath it gave way at the Tarxien square project this morning, amid concerns from residents and businesses about safety in the area.
The operator reportedly jumped clear as he felt the machine beginning to overturn.
Works on the square and surrounding streets began in August 2025 and have now been under way for more than a year. Residents have long warned about dangers in the area.
“Nobody is taking things seriously,” a local business owner said.
Another person described the danger as evident, saying: “We ourselves are at risk.”
The incident has heightened concerns about safety around the ongoing works and the time being taken to complete the project.
