The Malta Rangers Unit has published a map showing all the sites on agricultural land used for bird trapping, which are legally disguised as trapping sites for research purposes.
The fraudulent designation of these sites as research facilities is intended to ensure that bird trapping complies with EU rules.
The Malta Rangers Unit has published a map showing up to 5,488 trapping sites in total, all of which have been registered with the government as trapping sites for research purposes.
The sites have been categorised as follows:
Finch ‘research’ sites: 3688
Golden Plover and Song Thrush: 1501
Only Golden Plover: 24
Only Song Thrush: 275
BirdLife Malta has condemned the massacre of birds that took place in the recent bird hunting season with widespread and unontrolled killing of migratory birds flying through Malta.
